The presentation will discuss the basic mechanisms of soil-water interaction, how various soil management practices affect these interactions, and the importance in timing nutrient (and pesticide) applications with precipitation and irrigation to limit losses. It will discuss on-farm practices than can be implemented to promote both water retention in the soil profile, which is of particular importance as the West continues to experience extreme drought, and nutrient retention, which reduces economic losses for farmers and improves environmental health.
